New officers were elected this week at the Associated Students Senate meeting.
The Vice President of Finance is Senator Stams. Senator Richards, the new Senator
Pro Tempore, will act as Vice President in the case of Vice President D. Ramirez leaving or having to take the place of President C. Ramirez.
The senators heard a presentation from Alberto Ramirez, community activist, about the Coalition for Clean and Safe Ports, which is lobbying the Port of Los Angeles Commission to set standards for, and regularly inspect, the trucks that enter the port area. The trucks have been identified by the Coalition as being the major source of air pollution in the southland area including Harbor College. The Coalition wants the Port Commission to go green: buy new trucks with diesel scrubbers, hire the truckers permanently, and give them health insurance. Currently, the truckers are independent operators, subcontracted to large trucking companies who do not provide health insurance or pay for upkeep on the vehicles. Mr. Ramirez pointed out that air pollution causes asthma and asthma is a public health crisis affecting 17% of the children in Long Beach - twice as many as in the rest of the United States. Harbor College Students who are interested in going to Port Commission meetings with Mr. Ramirez and members of the Coalition for Clean and Safe Ports to show their support for the "Clean Trucks Program" should contact Alberto Ramirez at (310) 872-7319.
In other business, Alpha Gamma Sigma Club representatives announced that they will host a Halloween Event on October 21st. AGS is also helping recruit walkers to participate in the Annual Aids Walk and they assist the Pet Shelter. AGS, the Scholastic Honor Club, meets in CV-3 on Mondays at 2:30.
As the student senators are all enrolled in Political Science 1077, Dean Malone lectured on the subject of parliamentary procedure.
