The Air Quality Management District (AQMD) Governing Board approved a contract with the University of Southern California to determine the risk of the transports carrying commercial goods through the San Pedro Bay ports, and the effect it has on children's health.
Public health researchers believe that emissions from the transports increase the risk of asthma with the local children near the ports as opposed to other South Coast areas. Kindergarten and fourth grade students in the community will be taking part in the study to have their health status documented.
The results will aim to benefit public health and future research of emission exposure.
