Valentine's Day is a cultural phenomenon.
Hallmark has over 1,330 different cards specifically made for Feb. 14, and approximately 110 million roses will be sold and delivered within a three-day period.
For couples it is a day for loser boyfriends to prove they are worth their girlfriend's commitment, and for wishful girlfriends to be disappointed once again.
With all this "love" in the air, what do singles do on the most romantic day of all?
Recently, frustrated singles across the nation have renamed the holiday Singles' Awareness Day and formed anti-Valentine's Day groups online. Here are some ideas for those of you celebrating Single's Awareness Day.
Many local bars are offering specials on drinks. For Torrance residents, Killian's Pub and Grill, located in the Rolling Hills Plaza on PCH, is offering deals on tequila shots, advertising that "Corralejo will love you…and she'll even bring along a friend! (Miss Lime!)," and suggesting singles "make a date" with the bar, and the tequila.
Another flier jokingly tries to convince lonely singles they may find their true love if they go out drinking on Valentine's Day: "Who knows…your soul mate could be two stools down." For those singles with a healthy thirst to drown their sorrow, bars from Torrance to the Hermosa Beach Pier may as well be giving drinks away.
Another popular option for adventurous men is to visit the neighborhood gentleman's club. Living in the Los Angeles area grants men access to watch some of the best looking girls in the world dance on a pole. All you single gents should make your date with Destiny before her shift ends.
For men unaware of popular strip clubs in the area, or for those who want a change from their usual haunt, CitySearch.com offers a list of their favorite Los Angeles strip clubs, with plenty of feedback from patrons.
No longer are strip clubs focused on male clientele, in today's world it is socially acceptable and fun for women to gawk at scantily clad men. By far the most popular and classiest "gentlewoman's club" in Los Angeles is LaBare. Set in a Cabaret setting, it is better to plan in advance and purchase tickets for the show, which includes some comedy but focuses on male erotic dancing. After the show LaBare offers an after party consisting of lap dances from hunky Chippendale dancers until 2 a.m.
For more timid single ladies in the mood to flirt and scope out babes, there are always L.A.'s hot bartenders to take advantage of this Valentine's Day. It is a job requirement nowadays that bartenders have to look like Calvin Klein models and everywhere you go, from Huntington Beach to West Hollywood, and the hottest men around are guaranteed to be found behind the bar. Think of it as a strip club for women: it's almost guaranteed you won't date them, but how much fun it is to look?
And for the more sophisticated crowd, the Getty Center has an exhibition focused on nudes. Always a favorite of art junkies, the Getty Center has a collection of exceptional nude artworks. The exhibit includes sculptures from Ancient Greece, Europe's 17th century nudes, and even more contemporary photographs from recent years, all of which exploring the idea of sexuality during different eras. From males to females, the collection is bound to have something for everybody.

"Valentine's Day," said Heather, "is a cultural phenomenon." Yes, but it's big business too.

Yeah, this is the exact opposite of a cult phenomenon now... maybe it was 50 years ago.
