Thanks to the awareness and influence of the students and faculty at Harbor College, our campus has shown visible change and progress in the school's efforts to 'go green'. According to ASO President, Rachael Richards, the recycling program at Harbor College was implemented on July 1st, 2008 with the help of Director of College Facilities, Bill Engler. As a result of their efforts, blue receptacles labeled with recycling symbols can be seen throughout campus.

In an effort to enrich the progress of this movement and his student athletes, Football Coach Andrew Alvillar began accepting clean recyclables as an additional fund for his team's uniforms and equipment. Alvillar "...has always recycled..." in his home, so when he noticed the plastic water bottles the student athletes would occasionally leave in the gym or in the weight room, he "...saw the need..." to recycle on campus. He then began an informal recycling system in his office where students could put their plastic bottles and cans in a basket so he could send to a recycling center. "It's easy money," Alvillar said, "[that we use] just based on the needs of the teams." The recycling started "...last year [when the teams] wanted new jerseys. [Now,] during the off seasons, the guys (team members) bring in water bottles." Coach Alvillar makes sure to recycle the deposited bottles and cans "...whenever it accumulates [because] it's a supplement...", outside of the district budget for the athletics department, which funds much of the team's necessities. The new funds resulted as an effective source of income.

When asked about any positive feedback or support Coach Alvillar has received from the community, he mentioned Rachel Richards, who "...has done the most promoting for [the cause]. She created flyers to pass around [campus] and let people know." Donations have helped as well. The ASO, along with some of the Harbor faculty have donated bags of recyclables to his office on occasion. Students can be assured that all profits from Avillar's recycling go to the athletic department, and are accounted for by the ASO through Liz Anceno, the ASO V.P. of Finance. If any student or faculty member would like to donate plastic bottles or cans to Coach Alvillar, his office is located in room PE 120.

In order to increase awareness and ensure the effectiveness of the program, students are invited to take full advantage of the facilities being offered at Harbor College. Members of the Harbor community can find recycling suggestions printed on flyers and posters all over campus. The information printed on the flyers briefly explains the ways in which students and faculty can help the cause by making sure they deposit any trash into the trash cans, and the recyclable materials into the proper recycling receptacles around campus. Materials accepted for recycling include "paper products (magazines, newspapers, books, and file folders), cardboard boxes, cans, plastic materials, and glass, with the exception of light bulbs."
