It seems that the tuition at this school and all around California Community Colleges has gone through the roof and there is nothing that we can do about it. The more classes you have the more likely you are to spend money on supplies, not to mention an insane amount of books that you need. Since, we're in a recession it seems that it wouldn't make sense to spend so much money on books that you might need only one semester. Due to the political and economic downturn of our country, it seems that the price of books used for students in college goes up one hundred dollars every year and keeps climbing every semester, in the past books used to cost approximately fifty bucks; now it seems that they cost two hundred books and that's only for one subject. Depending on the classes you have [and how many classes you have in total], the more likely you are to spend money. The more likely you are to spend money for books, it seems that the more likely the publishing company is going to receive profits for them. It seems that the teachers who are actually giving the lessons are being stiffed out of receiving funds for the information their giving because it's being transferred from the book to their lips, therefore only being a lip-service for the author who's lessons are essentially being presented to the students of this school.
Which leads me to another subject, the culinary arts department at our school, note what I'm about to say is in no disrespect to them but it needs to be said. The one inquiry I have about this particular department in our school is that their food is good, but it cost way too much. If you only get one item, it costs about a buck, but if you get a full plate, it costs about six bucks which is way too much for a meal in the opinions of some. Then another problem that other students have is the fact that the food isn't that diverse nor does it taste good. The variety of the food is good especially if you have the palette for it, but if you don't the only other option is the vending machines and it takes too long to get food from their either. Think about it, the moment you get there, you have to wait in line and then you have to pick the exact item that you want; then there's the possibility that it gets stuck in the vending machine and you have to waste another dollar to get it out.
One good thing about these changes is that if you're willing to speak up; then things might change for the better. A fellow journalism student who is also on the newspaper staff has talked to the Culinary Arts Department of the school about dropping the prices of the food served as well as asking for a wider variety. The usual menu of the department is based on extravagance. He has also asked for an alternative, a roach coach, which will give students the opportunity to get something for about a dollar in a timely fashion and not have to worry about having to run to class in the fear of being later.
In closing, all of the changes that Harbor College is going through at this present time are good, but some things need to be kept the way they are. It's the simplicity of things that makes them understandable.
