According to Vice President of Administrative Services Ann Tomlinson, the four-story building on the northwest end of campus at L Street will feature an underground level, as well as three stories above ground. On the roof of the structure will be a solar panel grid, which would collect energy during the day and use that to power the entire campus.
Total cost is expected to be $12 to $15 million.
Tomlinson said that, unlike many parking structures that are unsightly and square-like, this one would be "aesthetically pleasing" and resemble a building rather than a simple level by level assembly.
The structure is expected to have approximately 1,200 parking spaces, dwarfing the number of spaces the three main campus lots have now combined. Currently, Tomlinson said, Harbor College has about 500 student spaces.
The ample parking space may also be a deal breaker for some students looking to attend a college with convenient parking, potentially increasing the number of students applying to LAHC, Tomlinson said.
The structure came about after the College Planning Council decided that rather than leveling the area and covering it with pavement, it would be better to create a multi-storied building, taking less space and allowing more cars the ability to park.
The structure is still in the works but is looked to be built within the next five years.
