Motivated by her husband's love for his country, Herminia Geis attempted to enlist in the Army National Guard. She wanted to help in disasters such as fires and hurricanes such as Hurricane Katrina. "I had an eagerness to help," explained Herminia Geis, "to be a productive citizen". They would not except her diploma from Mexico and sent her to Century High School to earn an equivalent. She received her G.E.D in August 2007, a month before Jeff Geis left.
Education has always been important to Herminia Geis. She worked in Palos Verdes, cleaning houses in order that her children could attend PV schools under the now out of date Allen Bill. Her father, who is a farmer in Mexico, was only able to receive a third grade education. He told her as a child "Education is the only thing that I'm going to be able to give you." She is one of nine children. All of who have gone on to college and received degrees. One at a time, the siblings helped each other in order to achieve their educational goals. They are proud to say their own children are attending college.
"We may not have achieved the American dream but our children will receive their education".
