A native of Olympia, Layce, Washington Tavui attended North Thurston High School and started on the defensive line 3 out of the 4 years, he was an all-area, all-conference selection in his junior and senior years. In his senior year, Thurston High School advanced to the semi-finals of the playoffs. Furthermore while in high school, Tavui played a season of rugby, which [if you're not aware] is football without padding.
He took his uncle's advice and enrolled in Harbor College. After high school, Tavui's Uncle Randy Morris was a football coach at the school for 5 years and felt it was a good school for Tavui. Randy Morris saw the development in Tavui, "knowing that he was a player who would go far". Coach Peabody of Harbor called Tavui "the heart of the defense and that this was the perfect guy to have meet your daughter, but he could also knock your lights out".
Coach Christenne the Receiving & Recruiting Coach for the Southern California Area for Missouri Valley State College says that he is "real aggressive & can play' insisting that he begin play immediately". Last year Missouri Valley State finished with a 9-1 record but lost in the first round of the playoffs and were rank 3rd in the nation in defense for the last three years
