LAHC has not limited itself to campus renovation and upgrading. The school has a vision and eventually plans on accommodating the growing enrollment as well as preparing for an inevitable future.
One way in which the campus has prepared for imminent growth is by repaving the south section of lot 8 to provide more parking spots than there were before. Construction to make the south end of lot 6 bigger is currently underway. After construction is complete the school will erect a three-tier parking structure along L St. The new structure will hold 1,200 spots.
The funds for such projects come from measure J, a $3.5 billion bond for community colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District. The money is to be allocated to the nine campuses in the LACCD over the course of ten years. "These things take time," Spink said.
Not every student is keen on extending campus borders.
"Let's improve the quality of the campus we already have," LAHC student Rebecca Garibay said. "From a realistic standpoint, expansion isn't possible. Expansion is a positive thing but you have to see the issues at hand. Let's get out of debt first. Let's use the space we have more effectively."
