About 30 online courses ranging from Accounting to Sociology will go on as planned this summer at Los Angeles Harbor College. Extension courses and College for Kids will also remain open.

But the bulk of the campus' offerings - about 200 tranferable courses in all that were scheduled to begin after July 1 - remain on the shelf as the fallout continues from Wednesday's Board of Trustees vote to cancel the second session of classes.

Ironically, the board took the vote while meeting on the LAHC campus, which gambled on a late start of July 6 this year for all of its classroom courses.

It's estimated that the state fiscal crisis will drain the Los Angeles Community College District of as much as $90 million in revenue in the coming school year.

Cutting summer courses at all nine district schools is expected to save about $14 million, according to an email sent Friday to Harbor College staff from LAHC president Linda M. Spink.

But Spink indicated that the savings to LAHC would be less around $3 million. And she indicated once again that further cuts will be necessary.

The college attempted damage control Friday with a message from Spink on its Web site, www.lahc.edu.:

"We regret to inform you that due to the dramatic problems with the California budget, Harbor College and its sister LACCD colleges MUST CANCEL the 2009 SUMMER SESSIONS that were due to begin in July, as directed by the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles Community College District on May 27, 2009. Harbor College,as well as several of the other colleges will offer an online session that begins mid-June; ELAC, LACC, Mission, Pierce, Southwest, Trade, Valley. To view their class schedules, visit www.LAColleges.net
We deeply regret any inconvenience this summer cancellation may cause you. The Fall semester will still begin on August 31. We encourage you to enroll in classes today if you have not already done so to ensure your space in the class. Academic Counseling services will remain open through the summer as well as financial aid, admissions and other student services. Please visit the web site next week for their summer hours of operation. We look forward to seeing you on campus next Fall."

The news of summer cancellations broke suddenly Thursday afternoon and most students appeared stunned (see Harbor Tides "Reaction to summer school cancellation").

Late Wednesday night Spike indicated in another email that students would be informed via email about the closures, but did not give a timeline.

On Friday several people involved in budget discussions indicated they were concerned the board of trustees acted too fast and without giving enough time to plan for the current scenario.
