A human error caused as many as 14 part-time Los Angeles Harbor College Speech instructors to go without a paycheck last week. College Officials described the problem as "internal miscommunication."

The problem was triggered by the recent Speech Department move to the Humanities and Fine Arts Department.

Speech instructor Mark Shannon first found out about the issue through a bank email that verifies him whether or not a deposit is made in his account. His email stated that his account wasn't funded by the LACCD and that he would need to deposit money in his account to cover his automatic mortgage payment that was due a few days later. Shannon said he was shocked and made attempts to contact the college to confirm the incident.

Shannon usually gets a direct deposit from Harbor in the morning on the 30th of every month, the day it is believed that all LAHC instructors are paid.

"I'm not bitter about the situation," said Shannon. "It just sucks to hear from my bank that I didn't get paid. Harbor has handled the problem extremely well. All the instructors here at Harbor have had the Speech teachers back to help us get paid. Mark Wood and his assistant Noela have been on top of everything. Claudette McClenney has done a wonderful job being very professional and very prompt," said Shannon.

Humanities and Fine Arts Division Chairman Mark Wood confirmed the issue. "It's more of a technological error," said Wood . The problem was exactly caused by the move of one department to another. The problem is currently already being fixed and the speech instructors should have their paycheck by Friday."

On exactly how this actual problem happened is still unknown but no one is pointing fingers at any one.

This particularly problem only affected Harbor College.

In a related issue, an entire District-wide problem involving all part time instructor's paychecks has also occurred. It affects many part-time instructors in the Los Angeles Community College District who found errors in their paychecks, errors ranging from being shortchanged in their pay rate to having too much money being taken out for health benefits, retirement, Social Security and other taxes.

The LACCD could not be reached for comment.

One LAHC instructor was so outraged by her paycheck, she could be heard in the mail room cursing loudly, according to one report. Apparently, too much money had been out of her paycheck for health benefits that she wasn't even receiving and her pay rate was entirely wrong.
