There is a resource center on the Los Angeles Harbor College campus that many people may not be aware of. The Foster, Adoptive and Kinship Care Education Program offers free parenting classes to the community, foster parents and potential foster parents. Located in the Office Village 2, Room B, English classes are on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Spanish classes are every Monday and Wednesday. A two hour orientation is the first step in possibly becoming a foster parent. To schedule an appointment for orientation or a parenting class on campus, contact Teresa Lamas at 310-233-4405. Teresa is a relative care giver herself, she has had her two children for eight years, since they were three months and two years old. On mothers day, when her son was in kindergarten he made two cards, he says, "I have two moms, a belly mom and a heart mom." Teresa told him that he was born in her heart.

Have you ever considered becoming a foster parent? If you have it in your heart to help a child in need, consider opening your home to them. Financial assistance is provided to foster parents from the County of Los Angeles.

A foster parent provides a temporary home for a child in need of a safe and stable environment. An adoptive parent provides a permanent home if the child can not return to their birth parents. For kinship care or relative care, the child does not have to be related to the person that is willing to open their home. The prospective guardian can be a friend or a neighbor that has a relationship with a child in need of placement to a safe environment. After guardianship, a foster parent may have the option to adopt the child or have long term guardianship granted to them.

Foster Care parents are required to take six classes per year, that total 18 hours to keep their license valid. All of these classes are free of charge. The County of Los Angeles provides financial, medical and dental support for the children until they reach 18 years of age. Kinship care does not require the classes.

This is such a wonderful cause to help with. When a family invites children into their home they are not only providing shelter but more importantly love and security. (Continued…)
