In these changing economic times one might need to search out new opportunities to earn a living. If self-employment is an option the Los Angeles Harbor College Extension Program offers a one day class that prepares you for the California state exam to become a Notary Public.

A commissioned notary confirms the identity of a person that needs a document signed on behalf of the state of California.

Han Combs owns Notary Academy of America. She is an active notary public and certified loan document signing specialist. Han takes pride in providing quality instruction. Her former students have about a 90% passing rate on their first time taking the state exam.

"It is an intense class from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.," says Han. "Where the laws and regulations are reinforced by verbal quizes." The state proctors arrive around 4:30 p.m.

The 50 minute test begins at exactly 5 p.m. sharp. Results arrive within 6-8 weeks from the secretary of state. A background check is required. Han says of the background check, "Do not let a past minor criminal history discourage someone. Go forward with it. Every case is different and is judged on a case by case basis. Let the secretary of state decide."

A basic notary charges about $10 per verified signature. The $10 fee is regulated by the state of California. A mobile notary can charge more to include a traveling fee. Once a person is a commissioned notary they can take another class that Han offers, to become a Loan Document Signing Agent. The fee for this particular notary service ranges from $50-$125.00 per signing.

A notary, although commissioned by the secretary of state, is a self-employed individual. "There is work involved in getting clients," says Han. "How much time do you want to spend? How much are you focusing on starting your own business?"

Jennifer Jaye Fraser of Queen Bee Notary has been developing her mobile notary business for the past two years. "I love my job," says Jennifer. "I have the opportunity to work with interesting people. My business is based in Marina Del Rey, but I service the entire Los Angeles county area. I focused on getting the Queen Bee Notary name out there on notary websites to generate more business. I talk to everybody everywhere I go, to let them know that notarization services are available."

The cost of the basic notary class is $75 plus $35 for materials. The fee for the secretary of state exam is $40. The cost of the loan document signing class is $65, plus a $60 material fee.
