Los Angeles Harbor College Communications Division Chair Person Carmen Carrillo has been awarded the 2010 Journalism Association of Community College First Amendment Award.

"I was so ecstatic, I had no idea there was even such an award," she said.

Carrillo, who also teaches English, was caught off-guard by the award. "I make my English 101 students do a research paper on the First Amendment," she said.

Carrillo will be honored at the JACC Awards dinner at the 2010 JACC State Convention, in downtown Los Angeles at the Wilshire Grand Hotel on April 10, 2010. The dinner will begin at 8 p.m.

The JACC First Amendment Award is an annual award designed to recognize one or more administrators or trustees who has demonstrated extraordinary support for a journalism program.

"There are so many people who support the Harbor Tides newspaper," she said. "I used to teach journalism back when I taught in High School."
