The new Los Angeles Harbor College Physical Education and Wellness Center (gym) has students and faculty excited. The gym has a new design and equipment to offer to Harbors students. "I love the new gym and the new machines are great!" said Patty Chacon, undecided.
Nabeel Barakat, Chairman of Physical Education is more than excited for the new addition to the campus. "We have waited for a long time and can't ask for anything better than that, a clean environment, good for success and for students," said Barakat.
The new gym has better lockers and showers than the old one. In the hall, its new trophy display case already houses the Seahawks trophies. Its dance room is an improvement with speakers and mirrors placed into the walls and ballet bars for student dancers. Its basketball court can seat up to 1000 viewers. It has two fitness centers; one specially designed for the Adaptive Physical Education course and the other is for all of the other P.E. courses. Both centers have state of the art fitness equipment, plus there is also a special therapy pool for Adaptive P.E. students.
The building is also great for new recruitment. When an instructor walks a student in to the new building they can say, "Here's what we got, this is what we offer, what we are willing to do for our kids," said Barakat.
Due to budget cuts, classes that would be offered in the new gym will not be offered this summer, they will only be offered this coming Fall Semester. "It's too bad that classes won't be open for the summer, it would have been cheaper to take a class here than go to the gym" said Nicolas Diaz, undecided. With the appeal of the gyms new equipment, some students feel they should register for Fall Physical Educational courses as soon as registration opens, from fear of trying to get into an already full class too late. "I'm going to try and sign up for my fall P.E. classes as soon as possible, don't need to be left out now," said Andrea Barredo, Nursing.
The Grand opening of the new Physical Education and Wellness Center will be on May 5, at 11:00 a.m., all are welcome.
